Title: Defy (Defy #1)
Author: Sara B. Lawson
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance.
Publication Date: January 7th 2014

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king’s army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince’s guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can’t prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she’s sworn to protect?

My Review: 4.5 Stars out of 5 ***** Read 12/19/2014

This is me ^^ I’m ruined! I want to say so much about this book but I feel I have to be fair to the author and not put out spoilers. I can’t deal…..

So, where to start if I’m not going to give anything away, but get you excited about its upcoming release. Alexa and her brother Marcel find themselves orphaned, they will be taken. Marcel to be trained for the kings army, Alexa to the breeding house.

Only Alexa will not and won’t be forced there. She cuts off her hair and becomes Alex and three years later she is a member of the elite guard who protects the rather petulant and spoiled Prince Damian. She is one seriously kick ass heroine, if you know anything about me you know I flutter to these girls like a moth to light….

There is a war going on between the Prince’s city Tubatse and Blevon, its been raging for years and something, or someone is coming for the Prince. Nothing and no one is what they seem to be in this book. The plot is so well thought out I was sure I had at least six heart attacks and even more break down’s. It’s beautifully written with plenty of world building, with rich descriptions of the characters and everyone has a secret. Even the war is not what it seems.

What I loved the most (and again if you know me, you’d know I’d have had a huge smile on my face while yanking out the kleenex) was the author wasn’t afraid to show the harsh realities of war. People die, people get punished and some carry scars deeper than the gashes on their faces. *Sighs with happiness*

I couldn’t have wished for a better story, it has it all. Anguish, despair, hope, double crossing evil characters, magic and a good old fashioned love triangle. I think I held my breath for most of this story, it is faced paced and full of energy. The good guys just might be the bad guys and the bad guys might just help you endure through the battle. I was up and down more than times than Macy’s elevator at Christmas time!

It’s the type of story that you think it couldn’t possibly get any worse…..then it goes to hell in a hand basket. I was blissfully exhausted after I finished, I had been well and truly transported to this wonderful world Sara had conjured.

If you like magic, mystery, a brave author not afraid to tell it like it is, and a bad ass girl not afraid to unsheath her sword and slit your throat then this is the story for you. Alexa, Damian and Rylan will draw you in, break your heart then try to put it back together.

Excellent debut novel and one not to be missed!
